Vintage Chinese Console Table Black Lacquer Gilt Hand Painted Garden Scene c1950.

A striking vintage Chinese black lacquer console table, richly hand painted with a detailed garden scene and gilt decoration throughout.

The rectangular top is centered by an elaborate hand-painted garden scene depicting traditionally dressed figures moving through a pavilion landscape, including attendants, a parasol-bearing figure and a child riding a fantastical animal, surrounded by flowering trees, rockwork and architectural details. The composition suggests an auspicious Chinese procession, framed by intricate gilt borders against the deep black lacquer ground.

The distinctive Chinese silhouette is defined by the shaped apron, deeply bracketed corners and slender square legs terminating in small, shaped feet, giving the table its characteristic architectural profile. Coordinating gilt and painted floral decoration continues across the apron and legs, carrying the design around the entire piece.

Finished on all sides, the table is equally suited for placement against a wall or centered within a room, where the decoration and distinctive form can be appreciated from every angle.

Dating to the mid-20th century, this substantial console combines classic Chinese lacquer work with richly detailed hand-painted and gilt decoration.
