Antique English Book Press Table Renaissance Carved Oak Ebonized Cabinet c1880.

Direct from England, a substantial antique English book press with bold Renaissance Revival carving and rich ebonized accents.

Originally used in bookbinding, these early book presses applied steady, even pressure to pages and bindings during the finishing process.  A press of this quality and elaborate construction would have been made for a bookstore or bookbinding shop in the 19th century, where craftsmanship and presentation reflected the skill of the workshop.

This book press features a pair of boldly carved standing lions resting upon the ebonized upper crown and side rails, defining the Renaissance Revival character of this stunning antique.   

Dominating the center, the original large wooden screw, turned by a lever, raises and lowers the thick ebonized oak platen, set with carved lion brackets to the front and back. Below the platform, a full length ebonized front drawer is flanked by carved lion masks with brass rings.

The substantial base has a heavily molded ebonized panel with open carved brackets to the corners above the blocks.  A highlight of the stunning silhouette is four huge bulbous turned legs, joined by shaped, molded stretchers with raised edges.

A truly exceptional statement piece, certain to command attention in any library, study, office, or retail setting.  Superbly made by craftsmen of the period, circa 1880.
