Antique French Majolica Jardinière Planter Peacock Onnaing Large Cache Pot c1880

Antique French Majolica Jardinière Planter Peacock Onnaing Large Cache Pot c1880.

Direct from France, an extraordinary antique Onnaing majolica jardinière with magnificent sculptural peacocks and a dramatic curving silhouette.

Large peacocks project prominently from each side, their bodies set against spectacular fanned tails filled with individually detailed “eye” feathers, hand painted in realistic shades of blue, turquoise, and green for a remarkably lifelike three-dimensional effect.

The deeply shaped jardinière features high scalloped scrolls along the upper edge, raised pink blossoms and green leaves across the sides, with additional floral and foliate detail continuing around the lower section and base.

Hand painted in a rich palette of blue, turquoise, green, pink, cream and warm brown, the decoration brings the intricate sculptural details to life. The pale turquoise-blue glazed interior provides beautiful contrast with the colorful exterior and emphasizes the generous depth of the jardinière.

Made by the celebrated Onnaing pottery in northern France, known for its imaginative and colorful majolica during the late 19th century, this rare jardinière bears the impressed Onnaing sunburst factory mark and model number 366. A wonderful example of French naturalistic majolica, circa 1880.
