Antique French Carved Wood Wall Sculpture The Angelus by Jean Francois Millet
Antique French Carved Wood Wall Sculpture The Angelus by Jean Francois Millet.
Direct from France to us, this very large (46” ht.) antique wood wall sculpture, after Jean Francois Millet, inspired by his oil painting, “The Angelus”.
Note: Jean-François Millet (1814-1897) was a French artist noted for his oil paintings of pheasant farmers and landscapes, and a source of inspiration for Vincent van Gogh!!!
This piece is a stunning work of art, hand carved from a single piece of wood, with meticulous detail, and true to the design of the original oil painting.
This sculpture re-creates one of Millet’s well-known paintings, a commissioned piece called “The Angelus”, that was completed in 1857. Carvings feature a couple standing in their potato field, praying over the crops. Note the period dress, the harvest tools and baskets, with a steepled church in the background, and dimensional rocks/cobblestone, with foliage on the wide, lower portion.
Measurements: 46” ht. x 19” x 5”.
This carving is one of two that we recently acquired, sourced in France. The other is a rendition of “The Gleaners”, another well-known painting by the same artist, Jean Francois Millet!
