19th century PAIR Set 2 French Confit Pot Yellow Glazed Pottery Provincial
$ 1,285.00
19th century PAIR Set 2 French Confit Pot Yellow Glazed Pottery Provincial.
Direct from France, this is for two antique French confit pots, almost the same size, making them a hard-to-find “pair”. For those of you unfamiliar with confit pots, here’s a little info:
Confit is the French word that means “to preserve”.
In southern France in the mid 19th century these mustard-coloured pottery vessels were used to store meat such as duck and goose. The meat was packed in duck fat (lard) which served as a preservative (this was prior to modern refrigeration).
The confit pots were then sealed and stored in cellars, usually partially buried in the ground; hence, no glaze on the lower part of the pots.
“Confit d’oie” is preserved goose and “confit de canard” is preserved duck.
These pots have the traditional yellow glazing on the handles and on the top third, with the lower part left unglazed, as is the tradition. Lower bare clay has a nicely aged patina; both have fully glazed interiors.
Rustic primitive antique condition with nicks and parts of the glaze cracked and missing, and normal drips of glaze. Expect imperfections due to the age and handmade nature of this pottery.
Today these pieces are in high demand as French country/farmhouse decorative statement pieces. Own a part of the French countryside's history and tradition, with your own set!
