Petite Antique French Cast Iron Planter Jardinière Basket Grate Corneau c1880.
Direct from France, a unique find from our last shipment, a petite and quite heavy cast iron planter, probably originally serving as a hob grate or coal basket.
It features an ornate pierced backplate cast with Baroque florals and ornaments and a pair of seated figured flanking a vase, with the founder’s stamp below, “CORNEAU ALFRED CHARLEVILLE”.
The lower front is pierced cast with florals and vine ornamentations creating a fencework design.
Small but exquisite, this piece exhibits some of the finest cast iron work we have found. A bit of research reveals, in the last half of the 1800s, Alfred Corneau (and his brother) was well known for their finely cast decorative ironwork and production of magnificent stands, benches, vases and funeral crosses.
Imagine this gorgeous cast iron conversation piece as a centerpiece on your island or large dining table as well as in a garden room or patio. One-of-a-kind, c1880.
