LARGE Antique French Carved Cabinet Bookcase Breton Brittany Display China c1890.
Direct from France, a very tall and majestic cabinet or bookcase with stunning Brittany/Breton carvings, spindles and features.
The style and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France, which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, yet also their enjoyment of life.
All these Breton carved features are present in this cabinet! Fancy upper crown spindle railing on the high upper shelf with large finials to the corners. Spindle trim continues across the mid-level cabinet shelves that flank a center door with carved Breton figure and “ships wheel spindle” opening.
Four carved front drawers with open cubbyhole between and spindle trim above sit over the large two door storage area with yet another large open shelf below.
Quite a statement piece, versatile for placement throughout the home, excellent for a dining room, with so much display and storage room, this cabinet would be equally at home in a foyer or family room. For those with a large kitchen, imagine the displays of majolica and Imari and treasured serving items this piece could provide.
