Direct from England, a VERY large antique English oak wake or hunt table with drop-leaf gateleg design, opening for dining and folding to a very long and narrow profile..

Traditionally known as a wake or hunt table, this form was designed to expand for large gatherings such as community wakes or hunting feasts. The drop leaves allow the table to extend for dining while folding down to create a long, narrow console or hall table when not in use.

The outstanding base sets this large table apart, with TWELVE barley-twist legs on the table itself as well as on the gates and stretchers- typically associated with superior quality and craftsmanship.

Note that each leaf is supported by two gate frames rather than the more typical single gate, providing excellent strength and stability when opened.

Well suited as a dining table when fully opened, this piece is also wonderfully versatile, functioning beautifully as a long console or sofa table when the leaves are down. It could also serve as a substantial kitchen island or work surface, with the leaves easily raised when additional space is needed for entertaining.

Extremely versatile and always a conversation piece, as many are unfamiliar with the origins of the traditional English “wake” or “hunt” table.

Very heavy, solid, and well built by craftsmen of the period, circa 1890.
