Exquisitely hand carved 19th century French bookcase, in a versatile and unique, petite size.
Note: I believe this cabinet was handmade for French aristocracy, given the exceptional custom hand carved special designs throughout the piece.
The well articulated carvings have a distinctive musical motif, with each lower door panel having multiple carved musical instruments amidst the carved French ribbons, and full figural females playing instruments on both upper cabinet sides, standing upon mystical beast corbels.
Elaborate Black Forest style carvings continue down the front edges, a mixture of carved floral, fruit and foliate carvings.
Double glass doors having arched tops with carved trim; interior has original notched wood tracks for the adjustable, carved edge wood shelves. Wide carved lower moulding, with stepped out base and lunette carved design, above the front paw feet. Fully carved panels on both cabinet sides. Quality throughout, well built by artists/craftsmen of the period, c1850.
