Antique French Carved Hall Bench Settle Renaissance Knights Brittany Pew Chest.

Direct from France, a very large and quite exquisite antique French hall bench!

Some of the MOST intriguing carved panels we’ve seen, which leads us to believe it was probably commissioned by an aristocrat, and the carvings have specific meanings.  The outstanding back panel includes two carved medallions with knight cameos surrounded by carved sword, labrys, and torch!!!

The center panel depicts several warriors holding one, with two warriors pointing accusingly towards him. Carved background includes shields and heraldry, as in a castle setting.

Large sweeping arms with huge carved lions. Lower bench front features a center carved mask amidst scrolls and foliate, flanked by large dimensional “Green Man” style carvings.

More amazing details include upper dimensional warrior finials on either side of the carved back, carved “dolphin” front feet, and lavish carved trim throughout.  Large storage inside the bench.  Solid, heavy, and strong; quality throughout, well built by craftsmen of the period, circa1880.

Measurements:  54” ht.  x 66” x 21”.  Bench seat ht. 20”.
