~From our most recent buying trip, we have an ENTIRE COLLECTION of antique English “gentleman’s cabinets”!!  Many have dated, engraved presentation plaques, and ALL of them are fabulous!~

~Typically these boxes were used for storing pipes, tobacco, and game cards for men.  Today, our customers use them as conversation pieces, decorative items, and YES, as jewelry boxes!!~

~THIS BOX has the most interesting provenance/history, with it’s engraved presentation plaque as follows:

Of COURSE I had to do a  bit of research about the Countesthorpe Cottage Homes…

“The Countesthorpe Cottage Homes were opened in 1884 to house workhouse children from the Leicester Poor Law Union.

Cottage homes were established by a number of Unions, usually at rural locations, to provide accommodation for pauper children away from the workhouses.

There were eleven children's "cottages. Each home was under the supervision of a resident house-father or house-mother. The children contributed to household duties such as scrubbing the floor and preparing vegetables.  As well as the cottages, the site had its own school, infirmary, workshops, laundry and swimming baths.

There was also a site Superintendent and Matron who oversaw the children's welfare and administered any corporal punishment that was determined to be required.

~~~SO I’m assuming that superintendent was our “Mr. Harrison”!!~~~
~Fascinating!!! But back to this smoke cabinet, having 4 pipe holders on the upper cabinet with two silver trays; double tiger oak paneled doors; lock and key; fitted interior with 3 drawers and a large jar area.~
