19th century French Carved Oak Server Sideboard Barley Twist Wine Buffet Shelf
19th century French Carved Oak Server Sideboard Barley Twist Wine Buffet Shelf.
Direct from France, a very special, highly carved, 19th century French server/sideboard! Gorgeous open carved back with center medallion over egg and dark carved moulding on three sides.
Ornately carved beveled edge over the large carved front drawer, that has some of the most unique features we’ve ever seen in a server!
A multitude of possibilities here: first the top flips up and opens flat to reveal the recessed drawer interior area; next, the drawer/serving area can slide out to provide more room for serving/carving, etc.; finally, the drawer front itself has a special latch that allows it to also open and lay flat (Obviously, a commissioned piece for a very discriminating aristocrat in the 1800s, that had specific ideas about entertaining!).
Oversized barley twist columns on all four sides support the carved edge shelving; large carved lunette double moulding on the lower server, above the oversized bun feet.
Quality throughout, well built by craftsmen of the period, circa1880.
Measurements: 49” ht. x 44” x 20”.
