19th century French Carved Oak Bonnetiere Armoire Linen Cabinet Brittany Breton
19th century French Carved Oak Bonnetiere Armoire Linen Cabinet Brittany Breton.
Direct from France, a lovely antique French armoire or “bonnetiere” cabinet, with gorgeous hand carvings throughout. The term “bonnetiere” comes from these early 18th and 19th century cabinets that were used for the elaborate ladies’ bonnets and linens. In today’s home, these cabinets have a variety of uses, and this one is a particularly versatile larger size, with three open shelves to the left, a full-length enclosed storage area on the right, and a wide drawer below.
The style and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France, which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life.
All these Breton carved features are evident in this cabinet! Heavily carved upper crown, with carved banding framing the paneled door. Two different hand carved scenes are depicted on the door panels, with the upper having a gentleman sitting below a tree on a cobblestone wall with a cottage in the background, and the lower panel having a lady in the same setting. Carved panels to the back of the open shelves, with open spindle banding across the fronts; even the tiny shelf inside the middle has spindle banding!!
Shelves are supported by turned baluster posts. Carved front lower drawer above the carved lower apron and bun feet. Traditionally antique furniture from this region had a very dark finish and was frequently carved from oak or chestnut wood. Solid, heavy and strong, well built by craftsmen of the period, c1890.
