SET of 2 Antique English Wedgwood Majolica Pitcher Caterer Jug Shakespeare c1867

~Direct from England~

~AMAZING that here we have two of these unique and rare Wedgwood pitchers or “caterer jugs” for sale!~

~The body of the jugs are heavily relief moulded with bands of repeat design set between moulded belts of written verse.

Four band inscriptions are from Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors”, Act 2, Scene 1:

“What tho my cates be poor, take them in good part,

May you have better cheer, but not with better heart.”

~Each has different colouring, but both are the same conical shape with wide rounded base and narrower top, having a shaped pouring spout and handle~

~The handles have a wheat shaped design; spouts have a curled design with shield~

The jugs are decorated in shades of yellow, blue, aqua, turquoise and brown with a turquoise finish to the inside.

Both jugs have various impressed marks to the base:

Larger…Date code YZW for 1868; British Registry mark “T” for 1867.

Smaller…Date code CGY for 1870; British Registry mark “T” for 1867.

Larger has impressed monogram of Wedgwood designer “Frederick Brett Russell”(1813-1869)

Condition

Good condition for their age, with normal signs of age, use, dings, scratches, crazing and imperfections found in antique majolica.  Larger one has a separation on the interior, looks like it could have happened during the firing process.

I always provide multiple photos that should be considered as an integral part of the description and I encourage you to email with any questions prior to making a purchase.  Please keep in mind antique furniture should be purchased for its uniqueness, higher quality material and craftsmanship and antique patina…NOT for like-new condition!

Geaux Vintage Antiques has a large inventory of French, English and European antique furniture, as well as an outstanding selection of antique home décor.

“…with all that, why Geaux anywhere else?”…
