~A very unique French antique chair, with outstanding hand carvings, known as a French “smoking chair”, or “Fumeuse”, “chaise de fumeur”.~

~ Aristocrats had these specialty chairs created for their use when smoking cigars, pipes or cigarettes.~

~This fumeur was hand carved with exquisite details, the splat featuring a dimensionally carved Breton character with hat, above two crossed pipes!!~

~Twin barley twist post stiles frame the splat and support the upper back rail.  Rail features carved scrolls and stippling, and flips open to reveal storage for pipes, tobacco, etc.~

~BARLEY TWIST LEGS and BARLEY TWIST CROSS STRETCHERS with carved block joints (What an outstanding piece for a barley twist aficionado)~

~Brass tacks surround edges of upper upholstery and lower seat upholstery~

~Excellent conversation piece for any room!!~

~Well built by craftsmen of the period~

Condition

Good condition for its age, with normal signs of age, use, dings, scratches, chips and imperfections, including splits on stretcher and on the back splat carving (normal and to be expected).  Burgundy upholstery is an older replacement from the original.  Sturdy, but not really a chair to heavily/daily.  Screws/hinges on the rail are replacements.
