Antique Carved French Brittany Armoire Bonnetiere Cabinet Wardrobe Chestnut

Antique Carved French Brittany Armoire Bonnetiere Cabinet Wardrobe Chestnut

$ 3,875.00
Direct from France, here’s a lovely antique French armoire or “bonnetiere” cabinet, with gorgeous hand carvings throughout.

The slender, smaller size makes a “bonnetiere” highly sought after for today’s home, as they can easily be placed in a variety of locations. Of course the term “bonnetiere” comes from these early 18th and 19th century cabinets that were used for the elaborate ladies’ bonnets and linens.

The style and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France, which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life.

ALL of these carved features are present in this cabinet! Note the scene depicted on the lower door panel, with the lady of the house, and a kneeling suitor, with intricate detailed cottage, tree branches, even a water jug! (I wonder if this was carved as part of an engagement offer!!)

Other points of note here, the upper carved ship’s wheel crown is here (normally they are lost over the years); the side panels are all fully carved (always a sign of quality and craftsmanship).

Traditionally antique furniture from this region had a very dark finish and was frequently carved from chestnut wood.

80.75” height(including crown piece) x 36” x 18”.
72.5”height without crown piece.
4 interior shelves are 30” x 12.5”.

NOTE: All of our antiques are direct from Europe. I personally select each item for the quality, design and unique characteristics that you will always find in our distinctive inventory at Geaux Vintage Antiques!

Due to the larger size, this item requires freight service. White glove service, fully insured, FOB Shreveport, delivered and placed inside your home (first floor only). Typically 5-7 weeks, depending on your location.
Please note this longer time period for white glove service; no refunds will be given because of the length of delivery time. Free pick-up is also available at our location in Shreveport, LA.

Good condition for its age, with normal signs of age, use, dings, scratches and imperfections. Right side of the lower door panel has some loss at the seam; upper left crown is chipped. Separations in some carved panels; Key included, but old locks are never guaranteed!
I always provide multiple photos that should be considered as an integral part of the description and I encourage you to email with any questions prior to making a purchase. Please keep in mind antique furniture should be purchased for its uniqueness, higher quality material and craftsmanship and antique patina…NOT for like-new condition!
